SAN LUIS OBISPO - San Luis Obispo police are investigating a possible hate crime after a church is vandalized four times in one week.

Members of United Church of Christ on Los Osos Valley Road are both angry and sad by the attacks.

"A family of faith for everyone," is the message posted in front of the church.

Within 72 hours of putting up the message, a series of attacks ensued.

First the lights illuminating the sign were ripped out of the ground, then the display case was torched.

Days later, the vandal attacked the church peace garden, shattering a sanctuary window, and smashing stepping stones painted by Sunday school children. The vandal also tried prying open the front doors to the sanctuary.

"I have to admit Sunday morning at prayer time I had to choke down my anger," said Rev. Dr. Curtis Miner. "Whoever would do something like this, even if they disagree with our stance on an issue, if they think this is the appropriate way to tell us then they do not have the love of God in their hearts and we need to pray for that person."

Police said the vandalism is more than just a prank, someone is targeting the church.

"We don't know if it's directed at a member or the church, or whether it's directed at the church congregation itself," said Sgt. Sean Gillham, San Luis Obispo Police Department. "We are going to investigate this as a hate crime, until we can prove otherwise."

Police beefed up patrols in the area, and said they have a brief description of a possible suspect.

They said a witness saw a man wearing light-colored clothing.

Meanwhile, Church of Christ members are working to repair the damage, and replace the sign.
