LOS ANGELES (AP) - An attorney says the city of Los Angeles has paid $7 million to settle a lawsuit by a volunteer for the 2007 Los Angeles Triathlon who was left paralyzed after an accident during the event.
Douglas Aberle, attorney for Steve Albala, said Monday his client was left paraplegic when a traffic officer gestured for a vehicle to enter the intersection where Albala was riding a motorcycle as he officiated bicyclists, causing the accident.
Albala was struck and thrown about 20 feet. Alberle says Albala was hospitalized for more than two years, undergoing numerous surgeries.
A police report said Albala was responsible for the accident because he had been speeding.
A phone call placed after hours to the city attorney's office was not immediately returned.
