SANTA MARIA - It was a somber day for students and faculty at Santa Maria High School as they mourn the loss of one of their own on Monday.
Health Technician Nancy Simmons died Saturday in a motorcycle accident.
To help the grieving process students set up a memorial on campus.
For people who knew her, she was much more than just a Health Technician.
Students put pen to paper, not for a test but to pay their respects.
The emotional words of the students and faculty at Santa Maria High School are enclosed in a heart.
Most of which say "we will miss you" and "rest in peace."
"You just wish it didn't happen. For the reason that like you feel it shouldn't of happened that it just wasn't fair, it was unjust, somebody that was just there to help us," says Santa Maria High School senior Josue Cardoso.
"She never said no to anything, she had a great smile, very, very high energy and she's someone who made a very positive impact on our students and our staff," says Principal Craig Huseth.
The Activities Director Adrian Salazar says her dedication to the students is clear. "They're not missing a nurse, they're missing someone who was there for them to talk to them," he says. "I think the big thing that she left behind is the inspiration in that, that she's given to all of us to move on and live a happy life and never take life for granted and someone as great as her, someone as careful as her."
The school has set up a counseling triage program.
So students and faculty members, who are having a difficult time dealing with Nancy Simmons' death, can talk with a professional.
Nancy Simmons had been Santa Maria High School's Health Technician for 22-years.
