VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE - Before the sun came up Monday morning Airmen and Women hit the track at Vandenberg Air Force Base for the Run To Remember.
For many it's a very emotional mile. “When you read one of these cards and see how young some of these guys are how they're out there, you know these are real people out there,” says Major Christopher Mortenson. “It really puts a human face on this. It's real important, I think, that we really do remember who these people are and the sacrifices that they made for their country.”
Joining forces with the base Your Central Coast News promised to be on the track from six A.M. to six P.M., and we were.
People from neighboring communities even came out to honor the fallen. “That was surprising to see so many people out here in civilian clothes doing either walking or running and actually I feel honored to be out here with them,” says Captain Erin Daniels.
More than twenty three hundred dollars was presented to the wounded warrior project.
Money donated very generously by our viewers.
Our final runner of the day finished the eighty seventh mile for Your Central Coast News and it's one that won't soon be forgotten. “It's really a quiet mile, whether your running or walking because you have that individual in the back of your mind and you understand what sacrifice they made,” says Colonel Richard Boltz.
The goal was to run or walk around 5,195 miles.
As of Monday afternoon, participants had completed more than 6,000 miles.
Again, thank you to everyone who donated, everyone on base was truly grateful.
